My Journey to Spiritual Direction

Several years ago the Holy Spirit tugged very gently on my heart.  I didn’t know it at the time but He was calling me to a real relationship with Christ, away from a life lived lukewarm.

It was during a woman’s silent retreat when I felt that tug.  I was introduced to the idea of having a Spiritual Director.

But, why would I need one?

I took stock:

  • My prayer life was good (or so I thought).
  • I never missed Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation.
  • Confession was regular (once a year to fulfill my “Easter Duty”).
  • I homeschooled my kids, worked for the church, was a Director of Religious Education, started a youth group, created a VBS, led a women’s bible study.
  • My husband and I were happily married.
  • I never killed anyone.

Little did I realize that I was skating on thin ice.  My life as a Christian woman was tepid.  A reality check was necessary… it would take another person to help see clearly.

During that woman’s retreat I signed up for a 15 minute slot to speak with one of the spiritual directors.  It was only out of vanity that my name was on that paper; I didn’t want to be the only one not to participate.

Those 15 minutes changed my life.  They led me on a path of self-reflection, deep study, real prayer, and ongoing healing,

God never meant for us to journey on this path to heaven alone.

The trail can be difficult to see, hard to navigate, wolves nipping at our heals, the way can be very dark at times, and the light deceiving.

A spiritual director helps the directee listen for the small voice of the Lord, to help them see where the Holy Spirit may be leading, hold them accountable to their prayer commitments, and to walk with them during moments of healing.

I will never go without a spiritual director; they are as critical to my well being as my GP… infinitely more so because my salvation is at stake.  To go it alone would be stupid.

Anyone who appoints himself as his own spiritual director is the disciple of a fool.  ~ St. Bernard of Clairvaux

After several years of prayerful discernment with my my own spiritual director, I realized the Holy Spirit was asking me to pay it forward.  I am now a Catholic spiritual director certified through the Heart of Christ Spiritual Direction Program; and currently taking new directees.

If you are tired of walking aimlessly, unsure of your path, looking for clarity and spiritual accountability it may be time to take a brief roadside rest and seek out a spiritual director.

Read through my blog; if my style speaks to you, send me a message.  Or you can visit Seek Direction a Catholic website dedicated to matching directees with directors (I might just show up on your list of matches). The directors on this site have been completely vetted as faithful to the Magisterium with training from the highest quality spiritual direction programs.

In the meantime, please pray for me as I pray for you!
